On our first day in Tokyo, we discovered the Family Mart Egg Mayonnaise sandwich—an uncomplicated egg mayo mix on white bread with no crusts. Available in most convenience stores, these sandwiches, always identical, may be simple but are highly addictive. I was smashing at least two a day…
‘We left Tokyo at the right time. I love cities, but I can only take so much before it all gets overwhelming. After six days in the world’s biggest metropolis, we headed back to Narita Airport, not to fly home but to pick up a camper van to go and explore some of rural Japan.
We drove east and back across Greater Tokyo, which took a couple of hours to complete – even using the expressways is a slog. And it rained – big fat biblical rain. Fortunately, the Japanese also drive on the left-hand side of the road, so I at least had the advantage of familiarity. Places on the side of the road to pull over and compose are rare. The experience was borderline traumatic, but after a few hours, we drove into a roadside 7-Eleven as the rain cleared. Egg Mayo’ time.’
Over the next couple of weeks I’ll be putting together a Zine/book, ‘General Observations #2’, containing about 40 unpublished black & white images from Japan.
