‘Today’s name for the Peel town records but at one stage in its history, for the Gaelic-speaking Manx knew the place as Purt ny h-Inshey – Harbour of the Island. Here, ‘Island’ refers to St Patrick’s Isle. This inspired a Norse version from the invading Vikings-Holm, meaning Island. Thus, the settlement which grew up on the opposite riverbank came to be known as ‘Holmtown’, which, despite over three hundred years of English rule, remained in use until quite late in the 17th century.‘ – Peel Heritage Trust, Isle of Man.

‘Holmtown’, a book made entirely by hand, from start to finish, depicts a small slice of life on trawlers based in and around Peel, on the Isle of Man. It is now available to purchase.
