Holmtown

A few people have asked why I’ve titled my latest project, ‘Holmtown’? Well, for this longterm photo-essay, I’m documenting the lives of fishermen from my hometown of Peel, on the Isle of Man – Peel, which until the 17th century was called Holmtown. I was going to call it ‘Holmtown Boys’, however, a very good friend of mine pointed out that it sounds like a 90’s boy band – and it does.
This leads me to another common question regarding the project – why do I always use the gender-based term, ‘Fisherman’? Frankly, I am yet to meet a fisherwoman; I’d like to, but I haven’t. Fisherperson? Fisherfolk? No.

All images made using a Nikon F100 and 28mm 1.8G lens. Film stock is Kodak Ektar 100 print film. Thank you to the skipper and crew of the Genesis, Tony, Michael and David for their continuing help and generosity.

    1. My lovely partner, Hannah, has introduced me to vegetables and healthy eating, so I’m afraid I don’t eat Pot Noodles anymore 🙂

  6. I’ve met women who fish commercially in western Canada. Not sure how they self-identify, but I have heard just plain old “fisher” which I can’t help but thinking of as weasels. So I don’t use that term.
Great use for Ektar – no pastels in this subject / palette
