‘The things I saw’ – my visual notetaking and mental meanderings with a 35mm compact camera – I’d like to say it’s a regular thing. However, I just checked, and the last one I did was nearly 18 months ago, documenting a weekend drinking session in Liverpool with a good friend.
Before I departed for a weeks work in South Africa, to document white squatter camps, I was reunited with my favourite 35mm compact – the Olympus MjuII, which had just spent six months travelling around South East Asia with my eldest son. To be honest, when I gave Matt the camera, I wasn’t convinced I’d ever see it again!
I didn’t take as many photographs in the sloppy, sketchbook fashion that I usually would; because of the nature of what I was working on, I became totally absorbed in making portraits. I had been asked to get some video footage of my trip too, but the GoPro, literally, never even got switched on for a week.

Here are a few things I did see – all made using an Olympus MjuII and Kodak Ektar 100 film (I can’t imagine a place, with the colours and light of SA, more suited to this film)
