The things i saw (South Africa) #3

More visual meanderings from my analogue notebook and a passage from my journal. All images here were made using an Olympus MjuII compact loaded with Kodak Ektar 100 film.

‘Sunday 18th March – I’ve spent the last four days photographing people, old people, children. Families of five and six, living in sheds, surrounded by poverty and filth. I can’t give them anything, except a few packets of cookies and the odd cigarette to anyone who smokes. Every day I come back to my 4-star hotel, via a different steak dinner, and the same shop to buy a 6-pack of cold beer to drink by the pool. I posted a photo on Facebook of my bed, added a snide comment about how it’s just two single beds joined together – almost straight away my partner, Hannah, messaged me, advising me not to be such a prick. She’s right, as always. Yeah, my temporary accommodation’s guarded by a 10-foot wall topped with an electric fence, the fried breakfasts aren’t great, and every night I fall down a gap in the bed. But it’s not a hut, smaller than my hotel room, permanently surrounded by shit.’

I would sell my soul to have even a quarter of your talent, both for photography and writing. Regarding, Ivan.

  4. Your work is depressingly good 😦 Because I know that no matter how hard I try I’ll never get close to your level of talent and achievement 😦 I salute you, Mr Kneen.
