Divided Highway

I was recently commissioned to travel around the American Midwest to record events, and general life, during the days before and after the November 5th election. As usual, I kept a personal journal, which I have shared, verbatim…

‘Sunday 3rd November – The Quality Inn, just north of New Columbia, was everything but. Left at 5am to get to a Trump rally in Lititz, Pennsylvania. Parking for the rally was way out of town, near a small airport, but the Republicans had kindly supplied free shuttle buses. At the gate, I showed my registration, which I’d used the hotel address to obtain, but was told I wouldn’t be allowed in with my camera bag. By the time I’d walked back to my car, I’d decided that I wasn’t comfortable leaving £12,000 worth of gear in the boot of my rental, so I left.’

Over two days I’ve driven through New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia, away from the interstates through towns and villages. I haven’t seen a single ‘Vote Harris’ sign. I point this out on social media and I’m immediately pounced upon by people saying, “That means nothing” and “It’s not an indicator of anything”. I think they’re wrong, to be honest.’

Stopped at a little independent diner for lunch in Goochland (that bit between Charlottesville and Richmond). I go for the ham & eggs. The waitress asks if I want country potatoes or hash browns, I say “Neither, thank you, just ham and eggs”. My all-day breakfast arrives with country potatoes, hash browns AND toast.

Saturday 9th November – The Stars & Stripes – I think it’s the only flag in the world that’s as recognisable and iconic in black & white as it is in colour. And they’re everywhere, displayed with pride. I think you get 2 months in Belmarsh prison now for flying a Union Jack in your window.

Plan for Sunday – Get to Hull first light.Meet Marty/photograph inside and out.Hannibal for breakfast. Diner near tattoo.Back to Quincy for lunch. Start at top of Broadway St, work into town. Extra night?

  3. Excellent work Phil – The photographs speak for themselves, brilliant as usual. I need to start keeping a journal like that. I also need to learn to write in a way that speaks to people and is more than just informative – like you do.

  5. New York, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia are not in the Midwest. States like Kansas and Nebraska are. I guess I’ll just start saying London is in Ireland… while you were poaching me, I went to Scotland and poached you. Heh!

    1. I only drove down to Richmond through those states. I then spent 10 days in Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa – all of which are ‘Midwest’.

    2. Also, London is in England. Ireland is a different country all together…

      1. Really? Now you tell me. After fifty years of pretty constant travel, I have a good idea where things are located. As far as I’m concerned the Midwest is a different country compared to the Mid-Atlantic States like Virginia. So London = Ireland, even though I know where London is located. But if it helps London = Cotswolds.

      2. Who mentioned cites? “fifty years of pretty constant travel”, you could have come up with a more suitable analogy. If you “have a good idea where things are located you could have said, for example, Nottinghamshire is in the West Country, to make your point, but you didn’t , so you haven’t. So, what was your point? The other comments speak for themselves.

What an utterly bizarre thing to say…has someone been eating sour grapes?

  6. Oh, America…you big, beautiful, horrifying mess!

I have lived in California my whole life – sixty-one years – which I do realize is in America, but I can always tell when I drift away. There’s the flags, the Jesus billboards, the fetus billboards, the Trump signs and the gun shops. For a bit, when we were having so many wildfires in my county, evacuations, poor air quality, I was actually thinking about moving to a greener part. Maybe somewhere with humid summers rather than crispy ones. Anyhow – you couldn’t pay me to leave California now.

Anyhow – your pictures are so evocative of my country’s mood.

    Thank you.

    1. It’s an incredible country, despite all its little ‘issues’. The people are friendly and amiable, which, to me, is the most important thing 😊🙏🇺🇸

  7. Hi Phil, the diary entries are just as interesting as the pictures in terms of providing context to your experiences as an outside observer. I was curious as to whether you are able to share anything about who the commission was from and whether there was anything specific in terms of the brief, or did they just want you to go and follow whatever you found of interest?

  8. Superb set of photos again Phil – esp. love the raccoon, ‘Santa on the couch’ and skid marks. More power to your gonzo trip. Awaiting the next episode starting…
