M A R C H

I’ve never liked March; it’s a month of waiting, I always seem to be waiting for something in March. The days are getting longer, however, it’s still dark depressingly early. It’s still cold, I mean, heavy snow isn’t beyond the realms of possibility, but with the way this planet’s climate is going, we might get a heat wave. I have lots planned for April, and beyond, but I need to stop waiting…

  2. I don’t like spring much, the sunshine always seems to come in like a headache. At 7am there’s frost on the ground but by lunchtime the sun is so hot that the front door has buckled and we can’t open it! Great images as ever.

  3. Since my birthday is in March it’s always been the high point of the year! During school years, there was always a week of vacation, and these years if we haven’t gone somewhere warm and sunny yet, now is the time to go.

  5. There is something deeply unsettling about your landscape & liminal work, Phil. It’s a feeling that gets me right in the pit of my stomach. And please take this as a massive compliment – there are very few photographers who can do this.

  7. I agree with Sara – your images are very unsettling, but in such a good way. Would you mind sharing your technical process with us mere mortals? 🙂

    1. Leica Q2 Monochrome, which has a 28mm lens…but ANY camera will do. I usually shoot full manual and use the histogram to nail the exposure, but for this type of work I’ll either use aperture priority or even full program mode. DNG files are adjusted in Lightroom, but I don’t do a lot to them tbh.

I know a Phil Kneen photograph even before I see your name – you have a unique perspective and vision, and a rare talent which transcends gloriously above the sea of mediocrity.
look me up if you’re ever in Brooklyn, I would love to chat. Dinner is on me. 😊

  10. what do these images say? meaningless snaps me thinks. some look like the camera went off by accident. take a color photograph, turn it into black and white and it makes it art? wrong. what are you documenting what are you telling us? nothing. wise up the emperor is naked, people!

    1. Thanks for your input, Adam. The images are shot in black and white, they were never colour. I imagine a lot of what you see is meaningless?

  13. You are a master. Reading the negative comment above I know that none of your photography is meaningless as I have a great deal of first hand experience of your work, both in front and behind your camera.

  14. A month of waiting. That describes March perfectly. Of all of the months of the year, I imagine that March is the stepchild.
