Meaning Less

“I photograph to see what the world looks like in photographs.” -Garry Winogrand.

Not every photograph needs to have a meaning, sometimes a picture of pigeons eating vomit is just a picture of pigeons eating vomit, and nothing else. Waste water outlets on the same wall – interesting to me because the shape of the ‘matter’ looks like South American ceremonial dance costumes.

I, like a lot of photographers, including the late Gary Winogrand, simply want to see what the world looks like in a photograph.

  2. Every picture has a meaning.

    It does tell a story.

    At least, about the photographer.

  3. More great imagery. At one time Pineapples were only in the domain of Aristocrats and the super rich.

  4. The idea that a photograph doesn’t have to mean any more than the photographer liked it seems to have got lost in the last few years.

    1. Yep, suddenly every image has to be nuanced and laden with hidden meaning, when in fact the photographer saw a paint splatter or soapy water in a gutter and thought ‘I like that shape’.
